We purchased a home originally built in the 1920’s with an addition built in the 1940’s. We decided to remove some of the 1940’s addition that did not match the original house and build an addition that matched the character of the original home and took advantage of our adjacent, undeveloped lot. We selected our architect, Mercedes De la Garza, because she has a reputation for working with and respecting the character of older buildings. We were introduced to Robert Gurnea by Mercedes. We were immediately impressed by Robert’s open and forthright communication. He and Mercedes worked together to modify the scope of our project so that it met our expectations and could be done within our limited budget. During the construction phase we continued to occupy part of our house. Robert and his crew were always helpful and took extra care to communicate with us and accommodate our needs and schedule. Throughout the project he continued to coordinate with Mercedes to make sure the historical character was reflected in the new construction. Robert was also able to recommend state-of-the-art construction techniques (e.g., foam insulation) that improved our home beyond what we had planned while maintaining the historical character. As promised, our project was completed on schedule and within budget. It has been several years since Robert completed his contract with us, but we still stay in touch. He has provided advice and contacts for us as we have done subsequent work on our house. We were so pleased with the quality of work, we occasionally use Gurnea Construction employees for minor projects. We strongly recommend you consider Gurnea Construction for your project.
